“Yet when we came back, late, from the Hyacinth garden,

Your arms full, and your hair wet, I could not

Speak, and my eyes failed, I was neither

Living nor dead, and I knew nothing,

Looking into the heart of light, the silence.”

I laughed, awkwardly, but immediately felt stupid. “They are hyacinths. What—what’s that from?”

But he didn’t answer; instead, he leaned down and kissed me. It was tentative and brief, our lips barely even touching, as if only a trial, as if he were only seeing if he liked it, his face gently brushing against mine, his fingers soft and explorative against my cheek, and I inhaled that deep scent of his: expensive and starchy. Black pepper and pine. He pulled back immediately to lock gazes—I don’t know what he had expected to see—but the touch of his mouth against mine, however light, had been scalding, the shock of it clearly showing in my face.

“S-sorry,” he said quietly, wrong-footed for the first time since I’d met him. “God, I’m really sorry—I didn’t mean to—I should have asked—I just—”

But I didn’t want to hear his apologies; all I wanted was for him to do it again. I wanted to bury my hands deep in his hair and yank him closer. I certainly didn’t want him to be sorry.

While I stood there lamenting, desperately trying to put what I was feeling into coherent words, he jumped down from the counter, the heat of him still on my lips, his scent, the soft brush of his hair against my forehead.

“Wait—wait—” I said.

But it was too late. He was already gone.
